To Literary Mothers

Literature, I find, is not particularly kind to mothers. If they are present at all, it would probably be best if they weren't. But here is a tribute to literary mothers everywhere:

Gertrude, from Hamlet

Mrs. Thenadier, Les Miserables

Hester Prynne, The Scarlet Letter

Becky Sharp, Vanity Fair

Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby

Other mothers in literature, (for whom I couldn't find a photo):

--Pulkhenia Alexandrovna Raskolnikova, Crime and Punishment

--Irene Reilly, Confederacy of Dunces

--Mrs. Ramsay, To the Lighthouse

--Charlotte Haze, Lolita

--Mrs. Bennett, Pride and Prejudice

and my personal favorite lit mom:

Ma Joad, from The Grapes of Wrath
