Not because it was bad, but because I was laughing my heart out and itching to write this comment.

I am visiting your blog for the first time and have just read some of your posts. I must say that I see a lot of me in your reactions here. To this book (and the kind) and to Ulysses.

I have read neither nor attempted. But I have definitely attempted EPL type books. Specially the first paragraph of this post is something I have been writing in my head a number of times but never penned it.

Regarding sometimes wanting to read a book desperately but not enjoying it and still forcing oneself, just to see why the hell does this world pray this one. Happened to me a lot of times. But in the last one year I have given up on forcing any book on myself. What I like is a good book. Others even if the most successul, popularity or crically, is none of my concern.

I enjoyed you blog. Adding you to my 'Interesting Blog' list.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2409977216037478078.post-20268498264313606232008-07-19T02:13:00.000-04:002008-07-19T02:13:00.000-04:00Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the sense from your rev...Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the sense from your review that you weren't really into Eat, Pray, Love much. Did I get that right? Hey listen, sorry for this little self-promotion effort here, but I think you might enjoy my male version of her book, in which I don't do much eating or fall in love. I do pray a bit, but you'll be relieved to hear that in the end I utterly fail to get enlightened and basically remain the same jerk at the end as I was at the beginning.

Eliezer Sobel, author of
The 99th Monkey: A Spiritual Journalist's MIsadventures with Gurus, Messiahs, Sex, Psychedelics and Other Consciousness-Raising Adventures

You can read the Prologue here to see if it grabs you: http://www.the99thmonkey.comEliezer Sobelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08109131078976789684noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2409977216037478078.post-7526950674862700922008-07-15T15:20:00.000-04:002008-07-15T15:20:00.000-04:00I don't mind books that take a bit to get to the p...I don't mind books that take a bit to get to the point (after all, I LOVE 19th century lit, and they sometimes take a while), but there has to be a reason for it. I think it was the excessive hyperbole/over-dramatization combined with the subject matter and Gilbert's character, that converged to make me ooze with hatred over this book.

The frustrating part was when I started reading and realized how much I was going to dislike it, I started looking for "evidence" - other people who didn't like the book. But the usual outlets that I go to - NY Times, Salon.com, etc...they all thought the book was great, that Gilbert was immensely likeable, etc. What? Were we reading the same book? I'm utterly amazed at the amount of praise this book has generated.Kristinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10652999940839556218noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2409977216037478078.post-82494544683492080852008-07-14T12:39:00.000-04:002008-07-14T12:39:00.000-04:00I whole heartedly agree. I chose for a spirtual jouney type book Current Events, Conservative Outcomes by Freiman. It is obvious Freiman is an engineer or something because he laid his book out step by step from beginning to end. He takes the reader on a look at all the current events affecting America and how he believes he has been shown to address them. Then he ties it all in at the end with a meaning of life section that actually works. It is like directions to put together an IKEA purchase. It was refreshing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
